This article aims to inform you how to treat Erectile Dysfunction, know the symptoms, and how it may affect you psychologically.

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also referred to as impotence is rather common, it’s a hugely significant problem many men encounter, the inability to have an erection that stands the test of time.

This is a sexual dysfunction where the penis has difficulty and fails to keep an erection that’s firm enough for intercourse. The most common sexual problem that men report to their doctor.

The problem is difficult to quantify, it’s estimated that less than 20% of men affected by erectile dysfunction seek help. Research suggests that there are plus 200 million impotence sufferers, in the western world.

How does an erection occur?

When a man is sexually stimulated, by sensual strokes, touch, or sexual thoughts, the muscles in the penis relax.  The result is an increased blood flow through the penile arteries, filling the two chambers inside the penis. This filling of the chambers causes, the penis to become harder and more rigid as it prepares for sex.

When the muscles in the penis contract, the blood flows out through the penile veins, and the penis starts to soften with the erection coming to an end.

What causes erection failure?

Impotence (ED) is related to many factors, often both organic and psychological factors coexist, making it difficult to pin one factor as the cause. Some medications may also cause ED complications.

Research indicates that (ED) may occur because of problems at a certain stage of the erection process. This may simply be a lack of sufficient blood flow into the penis. Other reasons include insufficient penal stimulation, low self-esteem, injury to nerves in the penis, and many other possibilities that impact erection failure.

How to treat Erectile Dysfunction

Know the symptoms, first, then you need to understand the underlying cause or causes, to know how to treat erectile dysfunction.

When you have more than one cause you may need a multi-angle approach. You may require a combination of treatment and medication to resolve your ED.

There are several general recommended treatments, which include:
Aerobic exercise often recommended to middle-aged men to increase flexibility, reduce weight, increase stamina and blood flow.
Counselling, couples may find this a  good fit for them, where the underlying cause is psychological as it enables dealing with and managing sex and performance issues that are influenced by your anxiety, stress, depression, personal marital issues, religious beliefs, and any other mental issues.
Oral Medication, recommended by your doctor.
Pumps – Vacuum erection, this device assists to draw blood into the penis by applying negative pressure. This device is called a penis pump.
Injections directly into the penis
Surgical procedure – where penile prosthetic implants are used, often the last resort and is a common option

Alternative treatments include:

  • Herbal supplements – Gingko Biloba, Hypericum, and B group vitamins
  • Prescription drugs that are FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), include Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra and in 2012, Stendra was approved
  • Superfoods – these superfoods may help boost your sexual health and function as they help increase blood flow to the penis. These super high nutrient foods include avocado, oats, tomato, caffeine, carrots, chili, and apples.

The prescription drugs are said to increases blood flow to the penis, some are taken up to 30min before engaging in sex.

Side Effects of NON-FDA APPROVED Prescriptive drugs.

There are many other drugs available, and it’s advised to research them properly before use, as they may cause side effects and even more damage. The FDA has researched many of them and found little or no evidence of improvement.  Some reports of negative side effects include vision loss with men who have associated illnesses such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Other reports associate and claim and these drugs are related to the deaths of some men.

Erectile Dysfunction, also called impotence is the most reported sexual complaint by men to their doctors. Impotence is another serious sexual problem facing many men, with 1 out of five suffering from early ED. It is treatable in almost all cases, however, it will take some planning and may require outside help. (See below). A doctor’s appointment may be the final solution if all other methods fail.
