Clear up Acne – Herbal and Nutritional Supplements that Work!

As parents we hope and pray our kids have an easy transition into puberty. We know that as kids we grow up carefree, not a care in the world. We were invincible, nothing was going to get the better of us.

Then our teens arrived and we devastated by that very first blemish. How could this be happening to me we screamed internally.

Our first reaction was denial, this is not true and it can’t be happening to me.

The fear sets in …. then realisation. O my G….. how am I supposed to get a girlfriend with these things on my face?  Boys won’t want me because I’m ugly, I’ve got these ugly spots.

Mom I need your help we shouted! She answered: Don’t worry it will go away! But ………. know!

Yes, back then our parent’s didn’t have many solutions. There were not many treatments and we did not know enough.

As teens these ugly spots on our face and body can be traumatic and we just hate them.  

Acne is not life threatening.

However, it can cause significant emotional damage and distress, and may leave permanent scarring of skin tissue.

If you are part of the 85% of teens that have some sort of Acne and need to know what can be done about them?

Before searching for a Remedy it is important to understand:

  • What is Acne?
  • What cause’s and worsens an Acne outbreak?

1. What is Acne?

Often visible on the face, shoulders, back, and chest usually during puberty. An acne lesion is a hair follicle stuck in a pour because it is clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

A medical understanding of why this occurs

Acne starts when the sebaceous glands, the oil-secreting glands, overproduce oils or sebum, secreted through the pores causing pimples when they are blocked. The sebum carries dead cell debris causing blockages.

The bacteria that are present in the skin combine with this sticky oil and dead skin and convert into a mass that irritates and ruptures small glands causing inflammation and pimples to form.

Acne occurs more in boys because they have higher androgen levels. Less often in girls, mainly in the week leading up to their period. Adult women between 20 and early thirties experience cyclical acne usually a few days before their period. 

    What are the types of Acne?

    All marks on the skin produced by acne is a type of lesion. Mild cases of acne produce blackheads and whiteheads.

    When the plugged follicle remains open it’s a (blackhead) or closed a (whitehead).

    Acute types of Acne 

      Papules

      Inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch.

      Pustules(pimples)

      They are another kind of inflamed pimple. These are white or yellow pus-filled lesions, often red at the base.

      Nodules

      They are large, inflamed bumps that feel firm to the touch. Usually painful, these solid lesions are lodged deep within the skin.

      Cystic

      They are large, pus-filled lesions, similar looking to boils. They too are painful and  may leave scars

       Acute acne lesions include

      • Papules– inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch
      • Pustules(pimples) – white or yellow pus-filled lesions, often red at the base
      • Nodules– large, painful, solid lesions lodged deep within the skin
      • Cystic Acne– deep, painful, pus-filled lesions that can cause scarring

      2. What cause’s and worsens an Acne outbreak?

      Extensive Research and Studies have been done on this subject.

      There are several views on the causes of Acne

      i. Popular Belief.

      Foods with high sugar and high fat in a diet of chips, burgers, crisps, soft drinks, chocolates, sweet biscuits cause acne.

      This type of diet will lead to a sick or underperforming gastrointestinal tract (GI) with poor digestion and weak immune function.

      According to Andrew Rubman, N.D, a naturopathic doctor (physician), the above is true.  Contrary to many dermatologists, he believes that poor digestion is a likely cause of acne. He has cured many cases of acne for good by only improving the health of the digestive tract.

      He believes the body looks for an alternate means to rid itself of toxins. This occurs when the (GI) tract, loaded with pro-inflammatory substances caused by toxins produced by saturated fat in animal products and hydrogenated fat in processed foods plus refined sugar, coffee, and alcohol is poorly maintained.

      In the case of adult acne, cool down the (GI) tract with anti-inflammatory fats. These are the fatty acids found in foods such as cold water, fish, nuts, and seeds. Have a supplement of balanced combinations of different fatty acids. Combinations of fresh vegetables, seeds, fish and seaweed, and supplements high in Omega-3 fatty acids.

      ii. Other Beliefs

      It has been proven that one food may be harmful in excessive amounts, this culprit may be iodine-containing chemicals.

      This chemical is usually added to various kinds of natural salts, it is most common in table salt.

      In the 1920s after a study found that many people throughout the world suffered from iodine deficiency. To overcome this problem, they universally added it to table salt used in cooking and flavoring.

      Iodine is a chemical element or trace mineral, not produced by the body and is important for the thyroid gland to function properly. It comes from our diet in small amounts and is commonly found in seafood with higher amounts in certain seaweed, smaller amounts in grains, eggs, and some dairy products.

      Back in the 1920’s the practice of adding Iodine to salt made perfect sense. It solved a global deficiency problem which affected the function of the thyroid gland.

      The thyroid received enough iodine through the addition of table salt and thus the goiter (the enlarging of the thyroid gland due to overworking) problem disappeared. This was an easy fix and cost-effective too.

      Roll forward to the manufacturing era, we soon realize that all processed foods have table salt added. This is very concerning as we have an even bigger problem. Too much sodium and iodine in our diet, due to an overabundance of iodine intake. This is believed to be the main player and culprit in Acne outbreaks today.

      Our intake of Iodine and salt have gone through the roof without us realizing it. While manufacturers label their ingredients and nutritional food facts, it is present in almost every manufactured meal including breakfast cereals sodas, and juice.

      Some of these foods do not appear or taste salty, however, they contain salt. It is important to develop conscious awareness. Make healthy life decisions about eating fast foods-Junk foods as they contain excessive amounts of salt, fats, and sugars. This combination is bad for your skin and lifestyle.

      iii. According to the American National Institutes of Health

      These factors can bring on and make acne worse:

      • changes in sex hormone levels in adolescent girls and adult women 2 to 7 days before their menstrual period start
      • oil from skin products (moisturizers or cosmetics) or grease encountered in the work environment (for example, a kitchen with fry vats)
      • pressure from sports helmets or equipment, backpacks, tight collars, or tight sports uniforms
      • environmental irritants, such as pollution and high humidity

      3. What are Acne Treatments?

      Ways to Manage Acne Outbreaks

      Anyone suffering from Acne should manage their diet. Reduce refined carbohydrates and sugars found in fatty, fried foods, confectionery, chocolates, sweets, highly salted snacks, cereals, and soft drinks.

      Choose a diet of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, shell, and omega-3 rich fatty fish and limit any polyunsaturated oils.

      A. Consult a Dermatologist

      If you have a big or constant outbreak, as a first step you may want to consult your dermatologist if you tried self-medication options. They will assist to control your acne and avoid scarring or other damage to your skin.

      Acne medications work by reducing oil production and swelling or by treating bacterial infection. With most prescription acne drugs, you may not see results for four to eight weeks. It can take many months or years for your acne to clear up completely.

      B. Acne sufferers are deficient in minerals and vitamins?

      Recent research confirms that they are deficient in certain minerals and vitamins. Acne sufferers can benefit when adding Vitamin and Mineral supplements to their diets daily or they can choose to eat a diet that contains them.

      The recommended FDA, daily salt intake limit for adults is 6g, about 1  teaspoon or (2.3g of sodium)

      D. Skin Care Routine

      The Mayou Clinic promotes the importance of Skin Care, develops a cleansing routine combined with oral and topical treatments which are dependent on your skin type and type of acne. Cleanse the skin regularly to remove makeup, dirt, and bacteria. Avoid ingredients such as oil that may cause further pore-clogging.

      “I suggest Bioderma, as they have a great range,” says Dr. Mayou. “If your skin is very oily, you won’t need to moisturize.”

      Other recommendations by the Mayo Clinic include Natural treatments. These types of treatments may help reduce acne inflammation and breakouts:

      Topical treatments

      • Tea tree oil. Gels containing at least 5 percent tea tree oil may be as effective as lotions containing 5 percent benzoyl peroxide, although tea tree oil might work more slowly. Possible side effects include minor itching, burning, redness, and dryness. Tea tree oil is for topical use only.
      • Bovine cartilage. Creams containing 5 percent bovine cartilage, applied to the affected skin twice a day, effective in reducing acne.

      Oral treatments

      • Zinc.  Deficiency causes infections. The mineral zinc plays a role in wound healing and reduces inflammation, which may help improve acne. Side effects are a metallic taste, bloating, and diarrhea.
      • Brewer’s yeast. A specific strain of brewer’s yeast, called Hansen CBS, seems to help decrease acne when taken orally. It may cause gas (flatulence).

      Other Natural Acne Remedies you may consider

      E. Acupressure- Clear up congestion

      Jason Elias, a practitioner of Traditional Chinese, Medicine in NY, believes that acne is a problem with chi. According to him, Acne occurs when the “Liver chi” is stagnant or blocked.

      He prescribes accupressure for premenstrual acne. Four accupressure points require stimulation. Releasing congestive energy and toxicity of the body.

      F. Herbs – A formula to remove toxins

      Elias also recommends Western and Chinese methods to heal acne by cleansing the lymphatic system.

      One Formula is a combination in equal parts of nine herbs – red clover, burdock, yellow dock, dang gui, milk thistle, cleavers, schizandra, echinacea, and licorice.

      Method :

      Boil 1 quart (1 liter) water, and 1 ounce (28g) of each herb for 30 min and let it cool.

      Refrigerate and drink 2 cups a day for 3 months.

      G. Hydrotherapy – An herbal steam bath for your face.

      Elias further recommends a weekly steam bath for your face to open the pores.

      Use the herb, yarrow to the steaming water. Prepare 1 teaspoon of yarrow tea (loose) or 1 tea bag in an 8-ounce cup (250ml). Leave for 30 min then add to a basin of steaming water. Cover your head and basin with a towel. Keep your face about 12 inches from water without burning.

      If you experience bad outbreaks, use this method two to three times a week for mild outbreaks once a week.
